Help MEEEE!!!! How do movie people get actresses so white and pale like Morticia Adams?

Okay so i was watching the adams family and i was wondering about Angelica Houston. I want to know how the movie people got her so white and pale and luminous to play the part of morticia adams?? Is it possible fo average people (not makeup artists) to do it, say for halloween?
